NUFAM DAY 2024: Truck toll - successful climate policy or tax increase through the back door?

Since December 1, 2023, a higher toll levy has applied to diesel-powered trucks. At the second NUFAM DAY on June 20, experts from BGL, Die Güterbahnen, Öko-Institut, ZF and freight forwarder Rainer Schmitt will discuss the consequences.

The truck toll on federal highways was introduced in 2005. This initiated a system change from tax-based to user-based financing. After several extensions, the toll was changed on December 1, 2023 so that CO2 emissions now play a decisive role. In short: if you emit more CO2, you pay more toll - and vice versa. According to the German government, this is intended to create an incentive to "use low-emission vehicles efficiently".

However, many hauliers criticized the extended toll after it was announced. Associations that want to strengthen rail freight transport, on the other hand, welcomed the toll. At the second NUFAM DAY, experts will discuss this toll and the question of whether it represents a successful climate policy or whether it is merely a tax increase through the back door.

The panel will be moderated by Marcus Walter. The long-standing trade journalist already successfully hosted the first NUFAM DAY last year. His discussion partners are:

- An expert from the Federal Association of Road Haulage, Logistics and Disposal,

- Dr. Florian Hacker from the Öko-Institut,

- Rainer Schmitt, freight forwarder and

- Peter Westenberger, Managing Director of "Die Güterbahnen".

The discussion will take place on June 20 at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Center. The event starts at 10 a.m. and lasts around 90 minutes. It will be broadcast live - on the NUFAM website and on the commercial vehicle trade fair's YouTube channel.
